A big seasonal rush is expected on Europe's main roads during the weekend, the first holiday of the summer, according to Europ Assistance.
More than five out of ten Belgians plan to use their car to travel over the weekend.
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Europ Assistance expects very heavy traffic with many bottlenecks forming, notably coming out of Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
Heavy traffic is also predicted over the weekends of July 5 to 7, July 12 to 14 and July 19 to 21. In terms of departures, the busiest weekend on the roads would fall between August 2 and 4.
In any case, it is strongly advised to avoid Brussels if travelling by car on July 6 and 7 because of the departure of the Tour de France.
Touring also notes a decrease in the number of people travelling by car, which was offset by a combination of transport methods. Last year, 18% of travellers effectively opted to go by train, as against 13% in 2016.
France remained the most popular destination, well liked by half of Belgian travellers, followed by the Netherlands (26%) and Spain (25%). The majority (96%) chose to remain in Europe.
