Over 34,000 drivers were examined and 225 licences withdrawn during the eighteenth "Weekend without drink or drug driving" campaign, the federal police announced on Wednesday.
Last weekend, the federal road police collaborated with 92 local police zones to carry out extensive checks across Belgium. They tested a total of 34,085 drivers for intoxication, with 2.01% exceeding the legal alcohol limit.
This figure is a decline in infringements compared to the previous summer campaign, in which 2.29% of drivers tested positive. However, the winter edition of the control weekend noted a significantly lower violation rate of 1.35%.
Police seized 225 driving licenses last weekend, a higher figure than the previous summer’s tally of 183. Meanwhile, 78 drivers tested positive for drugs; 60 of these had their driving licences withdrawn immediately.
