A “reinforced” action plan was presented on Saturday by the Conference of Belgian Bishops following a meeting for victims of sexual abuse within the Church, organised by the Dignity Foundation.

This plan is based on the results of a survey conducted by the Church in collaboration with KU Leuven, involving the victims.

The online survey was launched by the Dignity Foundation last June. Of the 97 respondents, a majority felt that the reception and support provided by the Church were “positive,” according to the Conference of Bishops.

However, a significant number indicated that there is room for improvement. The victims are asking for more empathy, recognition, and structural support. Financial compensation, psychological help, and spiritual guidance were highlighted as essential measures. The study also recommends other reforms, such as a trauma-informed approach and involving victims in policy development.

Based on these findings, the conclusions of the commissions on sexual abuse set up after the documentary “Godvergeten,” and contributions from victims during preparatory meetings ahead of the meeting with the Pope at the end of September, the Church has drafted an action plan.

This plan includes appointing a national coordinator responsible for implementing and coordinating various initiatives, under the guidance of a national commission composed of experts from different social sectors and a victim consultation group.

A more comprehensive follow-up plan for victims will also be established, including the creation of a support group, reimbursement of psychological support costs, pastoral and spiritual guidance, and the organisation of an annual commemoration day.

Additionally, the overall policy for preventing sexual violence within the Church will be refined. The action plan will still need to be finalised, taking into account the feedback from victims gathered during Saturday morning’s meeting, the Conference of Bishops concluded.
