On Monday, 145 police officers from the Brussels Capital/Ixelles police zone and the federal police conducted a search of Haren prison, according to a statement from the Brussels prosecutor’s office on Tuesday.

During the operation, small quantities of drugs were discovered, stated Laura Demullier, spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office. Consequently, seven new cases have been opened, and some inmates will face expedited court hearings. Further details cannot be disclosed due to the ongoing judicial investigation.

Combatting corruption, organised crime, and drug trafficking in Haren prison is a priority, and efforts will be intensified, the prosecutor’s office affirmed. Two magistrates have been appointed to address these issues, ensuring the prison remains a secure facility where crime cannot take root. The retaliation faced by some prison staff is unacceptable and demonstrates the audacity of crime trying to infiltrate a public institution.
