Two staff members were injured on Friday in an incident at Beveren Prison, in Antwerp, according to the federal secretary of the trade union VSOA, Eddy De Smedt.
The incident occurred during the opening of a cell when a prisoner suddenly attacked two guards.
One staff member suffered a broken nose, while the other was slightly injured.
Both were taken to the emergency department for treatment.
The union condemned the violence and called for urgent and decisive measures to ensure staff safety.
Incidents targeting prison officers at Beveren are becoming increasingly frequent, according to the union.
"Every day, our colleagues work under difficult conditions," said De Smedt. "It is unacceptable for them to constantly risk their physical safety. Enough is enough."
