The European Championship is over for the Belgian women's football team after just two matches.

After the Red Flames lost 6-2 to Spain on Monday evening, Italy drew 1-1 against Portugal in their second match in Switzerland. This means that the Belgians can no longer qualify for the quarter-finals.

National coach, Elisabet Gunnarsdottir, focused mainly on her team's progress at her post-match press conference.

"I told my players this morning: the progress and belief of this team are so much more important than results," she said on Monday night."It's not just about today, but also about the future. This is the European Championship and of course we wanted to get results here, but we also want to build a team that can compete with the best teams in Europe."

Despite the result, Gunnarsdottir remains optimistic about the future of Belgium's team."We are heading in the right direction with this group and improving. I am very ambitious. I would never have taken this job if I didn't believe that we could take the Red Flames to the top of Europe."

With 0 out of 6 points, the Red Flames can no longer finish in the top 2 in Group B and continue the championship. They will play their last group match on Friday (at 21:00 in Sion) for the honour against Portugal (1 point), which still has a chance of knocking Italy (4 points) out of second place. Spain (6 points) is already certain of a place in the quarter-finals.
