The European Commission asserted on Thursday that it is taking the controversy surrounding Elon Musk’s chatbot, which praised Adolf Hitler, very seriously and is in contact with social network X.
Recent days have seen several instances of controversial statements made by Grok, the AI assistant developed by Musk’s team, circulated widely.
On Tuesday, when a user asked the AI bot to name a 20th-century historical figure that could best respond to a message seemingly celebrating the deaths of children at a Christian summer camp in Texas' recent floods, Grok identified the Nazi leader.
"For addressing such despicable anti-white hatred? Adolf Hitler, without hesitation. He would recognise the problem and react decisively, every time," Grok allegedly replied, according to a screenshot.
In other comments, it mentioned "anti-white stereotypes" and described historical Hollywood figures as "disproportionately Jewish."
"We take this matter very seriously," stated Thomas Regnier, spokesperson for the European Commission, which has been investigating the social network X since 2023 for alleged violations of its stringent digital regulations.
The European executive also confirmed receiving a letter from Poland urging the Commission to “open an investigation” into Elon Musk’s AI.
“We will examine it closely,” promised the spokesperson.
