A 27-year-old Belgian hiker died in the Austrian Alps on Wednesday, according to local rescue services.
The man had been hiking with a family member in the mountains around Saalbach-Hinterglemm. They parted at approximately 14:30, with the man continuing alone. He aimed to hike up Geißstein and then descend to Lengau. When the family member couldn’t reach him by 20:00, emergency services were alerted.
Mountain rescue teams, dogs, and a helicopter were deployed. "The missing man was found at 23:00 on steep terrain at Geißstein, around 2,100 metres above sea level," said Joachim Mitterer, head of the Saalbach-Hinterglemm mountain rescue team. It is believed that he may have slipped while climbing.
Family members vacationing in Pinzgau were informed and supported by a Red Cross crisis intervention team.
