The United States has imposed sanctions on Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel and other key figures in the Cuban regime, according to Foreign Minister Marco Rubio.
The US targets the Cuban regime for its repression of mass protests in 2021. Rubio accuses the regime of self-enrichment while the Cuban people suffer from shortages of food, water, medicine, and electricity.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez claims that the US is waging a “long and relentless economic war” against Cuba but insists that they cannot break the will of the Cuban people and their leaders.
Protests against repression and political mismanagement took place in various Cuban cities in July 2021. Hundreds of protesters were subsequently sentenced to prison. According to Human Rights Watch, these individuals suffered serious abuse while incarcerated.
