The major maintenance work on the Rubenslaan (N270) bridge over the E19 in Zemst has been completed, according to the Roads and Traffic Agency’s announcement on Wednesday, and the bridge has now reopened.
The structural renovation began in April 2024 and was executed in three phases. Initially, the bridge deck was completely stripped and renewed, with a new waterproof layer, an optimised drainage system, and a new asphalt layer added. Next, the bridge was lifted to replace the old support elements. Finally, cathodic protection was applied, a technique that prevents corrosion of the concrete reinforcement, thereby extending the bridge’s longevity.
Furthermore, the final touches on the bridge’s upper side, including the installation of the permanent red coating on the cycle path, have been completed. The bridge is now fully finished and accessible for all road users.
This investment ensures that the bridge is ready for safe use for the next 30 to 40 years. The Zemst project is part of the Roads and Traffic Agency’s structural maintenance programme, aimed at renovating existing bridges in a timely manner to extend their lifespan, ensure traffic safety, and avoid larger expenses in the long term.
