A suspect in a shooting that happened on 6 August in the Outremeuse district of Liège has been arrested, according to the Liège Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident took place at around 21:50 at Jehan-le-Bel Square in Liège, when the suspect reportedly shot a man in his 40s then fled the scene. Initial information suggests the shooting stemmed from a workplace conflict between the suspect and the victim, the prosecutor’s office said.

The victim was taken to Citadelle Hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery between Wednesday night and Thursday. As of Monday, he remained in intensive care.

The suspect was identified and located after fleeing to France. Coordination by the judicial brigade led to the suspect returning to Belgium to surrender to the police in Arlon. He was subsequently transferred to Liège Police custody.

The firearm used, a Kalashnikov, has been recovered and confiscated. The case is now under investigation, and the suspect, who confessed, has been placed under arrest, said Damien Leboutte, the Liège Public Prosecutor.
