A 40-year-old man has been arrested in Antwerp in connection with a Saturday afternoon stabbing that left a 39-year-old man critically injured, Antwerp police have confirmed.
The incident occurred early Saturday evening. The victim was attacked as he drove out of a parking garage on Sint-Elisabethstraat, where the suspect had reportedly been waiting. The suspect then fled the scene.
Police announced on Sunday that a suspect had been identified and detained. “We were able to identify and apprehend the suspect yesterday. He is a 40-year-old man,” said Wouter Bruyns of the Antwerp police.
The exact circumstances of the attack remain under investigation. A police perimeter was established at the scene, and forensic experts conducted an analysis. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition but is now in stable condition.
The stabbing was captured on the parking garage’s security cameras in its entirety. These recordings played a key role in the Saturday evening arrest of the suspect.
The 40-year-old man is expected to appear before an investigating judge, who will decide whether he will remain in custody. Meanwhile, the investigation into the context and motive behind the attack is ongoing.
