Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has decided to resign, local media reported on Sunday, following calls within his party for a change in leadership after poor results in the upper house elections.

The NHK broadcaster stated that Ishiba aimed to prevent divisions within the party. Meanwhile, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper suggested he could no longer withstand mounting calls for his resignation.
