Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace for 12 minutes, sparking condemnation from European nations.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called the incursion “unacceptable” and stressed that NATO is prepared to defend itself.
According to Wadephul, the Russian aircraft were intercepted immediately, demonstrating NATO’s readiness. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the alliance’s “swift and decisive” response within Estonia’s airspace.
Estonia has called for a special NATO meeting to address the issue.
UK Defence Minister John Healy described the incident as “Russia’s latest dangerous action,” noting it was the third breach of NATO airspace in recent days. He accused Russia of acting “recklessly and dangerously.”
France’s Defence Ministry condemned the incident as a blatant violation of international law.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot expressed full support for Estonia and all NATO’s eastern allies. Writing on X, he warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “testing NATO’s resolve” but will find the alliance “united and steadfast.” Prévot characterised the airspace violation as “yet another dangerous provocation by Russia.”
