Because inland navigation on the Albert Canal has been threatened by the low amount of water in the Meuse river, mobile pumps have been switched on in Genk.
The cabinet of Lydia Peeters, Flemish Minister for Mobility and Public Works, confirmed this information to Belga News Agency.
The mobile pumps are being deployed by the Vlaamse Waterweg in the intention of maintaining the water level and ensuring inland navigation.

Flow rates in the Meuse and Albert Canal have been continuously monitored for some time, and it was momentarily thought that Thursday night's rain could lead to pumps not being required until next week.
However, because the flow rates are clearly too low, the mobile pumps had to be turned on today.
