The PTB will submit to the table of the housing commission of the Walloon parliament, which meets on Tuesday, a proposal for a decree capping the indexation of rents in the south of the country at 2%.

"The Walloon Housing Minister, Christophe Collignon (PS), says he has been thinking about it since June, but nothing has been done when the indexation planned for the rents of leases concluded in September amounts to almost 10%," argues Germain Mugemangango, the leader of the leftist party in the Wallonia Regional Parliament.

“Curbing the increase in rents is quite possible if there is the political will that goes with it,” he adds.

Last June, Minister Collignon indicated that he had instructed his cabinet “to examine the legal possibilities of tempering the exceptional indexation of rents” and declared himself “personally in favour of a ceiling mechanism.”

“Having said that, the experience of the hike in the indexation of rents in the past legislature requires me to be particularly cautious about the legal model that could be envisaged, particularly with regard to the principles of proportionality and non-discrimination, both with regard to tenants than owners,” he clarified.
