'Close', the new film by Belgian director Lukas Dhont, has been nominated for four European Film Awards, the European Film Academy announced on Tuesday.

Dhont's second feature film has been nominated in the categories of Best Film, Best Direction, Best Acting (for lead actor Eden Dambrine) and Best Screenplay (Lukas Dhont and Angelo Tijssens). The film has already been nominated for the European University Film Award.

Presented by the European Film Academy every year since 1988, the European Film Awards are the most important film awards in the European film industry. In the coming weeks, the 4,400 members of the European Film Academy will cast their votes for the nominated films.

The film – about a close friendship between two young boys – had its world premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix du Jury, the second most important prize after the Golden Palm. 'Close' has gone on to receive a number of awards at other international festivals, including the Hamptons Film Festival, the Chicago International Film Festival and the Film Fest Hamburg.

Last week, it was announced that the film is the first production in the history of Flemish cinema to be nominated for a British Independent Film Award (BIFA). In September, it was also announced that 'Close' is the Belgian Oscar entry for best international film.
