The Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) has increased surveillance at the Tihange power station due to concerns about the plant's health and safety practices.

The nuclear watchdog's officials informed the Federal Chamber of Representatives on Tuesday that they had witnessed complacency at the power plant in 2015 which has not been addressed.

Furthermore, the FANC director of installations and waste department An Wertelaers told De Morgen that a number of recent safety issues have become apparent that "are not dramatic in themselves but for us are not permissible at a nuclear power plant."

As a result, increased monitoring and inspections have been implemented at the location since mid-October. Frederik Van Wonterghem, another expert at the agency, added that particular attention will be paid to the correct application of procedures.

"It is a measure that we do not often apply, but we do it if necessary," he said of the surveillance, which will also include checks to ensure that workers consider all risks involved. The surveillance will be in effect until February 2023.
