After beating Standard de Liège 2-3 on Sunday, Union Saint-Gilloise secured second place in the Belgian Pro League table before the Belgian football league takes a break for the FIFA World Cup.
Union Saint-Gilloise knew that an away win would land them in second place before a month and a half break; the league restarts on 23 December.
Despite the added pressure, it only took Union 23 minutes to take the lead thanks to star striker Dante Vanzeir. But the Walloon side equalised at the start of the second half thanks to a penalty converted by Noë Dussenne. However, Union went ahead 15 minutes later with a header from their English defender Christian Burgess.
As the final whistle drew closer, the Brussels team increased their advantage with a third goal in the 87th minute, with Standard scoring their second in the 96th minute – too little too late.
