A 15-year-old girl stabbed one of her classmates in the face with a craft knife on the playground of a secondary school in Mechelen on Thursday afternoon, Belgian media have reported.

According to the Gazet van Antwerpen, the victim, also 15, suffered an "ugly" stab wound next to her ear. She was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment.

"The suspect, a 15-year-old, was arrested and taken to the police station for further interrogation," said police spokesman Dirk Van de Sande. "The victim is not in mortal danger and was conscious the entire time."

Following the attack, Colomaplus school Managing Director An Wyckmans informed Het Laatste Nieuws that the incident took place during the school lunch break and was witnessed by "many students".

However, she added that she was still unsure of the exact chain of events which led to the attack and that the school's management is currently "awaiting further investigation by the police".

"Immediately after the incident, we made every effort to restore calm," Wyckman said. "That was quickly achieved. Those [students] who needed a chat could turn to our student coaches."

The girl, who lives in Kampenhout, is set to appear before a Juvenile Court in the Arrondissement of Halle-Vilvoorde on Friday.
