Two guards at Antwerp prison were injured on Sunday following an attack by Belgium’s “most dangerous prisoner” – Ringo De Witte, Het Laatste Nieuws reports.

The exact circumstances behind the attack remain unclear. According to the Flemish newspaper, two guards were struck in the face by De Witte, who also attempted to gouge the eyes of one of the guards. A knife was later recovered from the prisoner’s cell.

Despite the attack on the guards, the incident was quickly resolved. "Thanks to the professional and adequate intervention of other staff members, the inmate was brought under control," the management of the prison said.

In 2018, De Witte was ‘awarded’ the title of the most dangerous prisoner for his violent behaviour towards staff and other inmates. A Ghent judge ordered the patient to be transferred to a psychiatric institution due to his volatile condition. De Witte is housed in the psychiatric wing of the Antwerp facility.

This is one of many attacks which De Witte has carried out against staff and prisoners. He has attacked one or more people in practically every Flemish prison he has stayed in. In one incident, De Witte is reported to have hit a chief physician, child murderer Kim de Gelder, and once threatened serial killer Ronald Janssen.
