A consortium of Belgian media organisations will launch a call for donations on Monday to aid the victims of last month's earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The initiative is being supported by RTBF, RTL, and VRT, among others, with TV channels set to broadcast the appeal for aid.

The mobilisation was launched by the 12-12 Consortium, which brings together seven humanitarian organisations in Belgium. “Every support is welcome and will make a difference,” 12-12 Consortium's director Gilles Van Moortel stated.

Their aim is for Monday's event to allow them to send further aid to Turkey and Syria, with both countries still dealing with the aftermath of last month's earthquakes. Over 55,000 people are said to have died from the tremors at the time of writing.

The consortium noted that this is the first time in close to 20 years that Belgian media is uniting its forces for such an event.

“You would have to go back to the 2004 tsunami (in the Indian Ocean) to witness such a mobilisation,” Gilles Van Moortel pointed out.
