The Muslim Executive of Belgium's theological council agreed last night that the start date for the holy month of Ramadan in Belgium will be Thursday, which will mark the first day of fasting.

After meeting remotely on Tuesday evening, the Executive decided that the blessed month would begin on Thursday, calling for the period to be "one of wisdom, patience and, above all, solidarity."

The Executive asked practising Muslims to direct their prayers to the victims of recent natural and human disasters, such as the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, during the holy month.

The Executive also announced that Ramadan would end on 2 May, when the faithful will break their fast for the final time during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
