The body of a Belgian hiker was found at the foot of a cliff on Wednesday morning in the Swiss Alps near the municipality of Ormont-Dessous.
The victim is a 29-year-old Belgian man who was visiting the region. A major search operation was organised on Tuesday evening after his family had alerted the police, Vaud canton police reported in a press release.
The hiker was eventually found on Wednesday morning at the bottom of a cliff and buried under some rocks.
Emergency services arrived on the scene and determined his death. The accident took place on a steep slope and the search operation included two helicopters, a rescue team and several police officers.
A specialised member of the salvage unit in the police is investigating the circumstances of the fall. A criminal investigation has been opened.
