Approximately 300 Belgian tourists who were stranded in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica for several days will now be returning to Brussels on Monday and Tuesday.

For about 300 Belgians, a holiday in the Caribbean did not go according to plan: they have been stuck in their holiday destinations since Thursday because their plane – which was supposed to fly on to Jamaica – was defective.

Due to a technical problem, approximately 200 Belgians were stuck in Punta Cana while another 100 were stranded in Jamaica. They should have returned home on the same flight, however.

Although Tui Fly sent parts and an engineer to repair the aircraft, the problem could not be fixed. The company therefore had to look for another plane, which was only found on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday night, the passengers stuck in Punta Cana were finally able to leave for Brussels and they arrived in the Belgian capital just before noon on Monday, Tui told the Belga News Agency.

"Some of the passengers from the other group are already on their way; the others will leave tonight and arrive on Tuesday," a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson clarified at the weekend that all stranded travellers will each receive compensation of €600.
