The Belgian TV series Moresnet has been selected for the Official Competition at Canneséries, the international series festival taking place in Cannes, France from 5 to 10 April.

The central character, Ben, played by Boris Van Severen, discovers a hit list in the series and embarks on a quest to identify the future killer of his friends. Moresnet is scheduled to premiere in Belgium on Streamz and in Germany on ZDF Neo in autumn 2024.

Following his father’s death, Ben Schotz, a man shadowed by his past, returns to his native village Moresnet. Joined by childhood friends including journalist Zoë Kuypers, portrayed by Jade Olieberg, he unearths a time capsule they buried 22 years earlier.

The main characters find Ben’s brother’s diary inside, which shockingly suggests their imminent deaths on its final page. Ben and Zoë scramble to alter their irreversible destinies as a perilous countdown to their prophesied demise begins.

The mystery thriller is created by Frank Van Passel, Jef Hoogmartens, and Jonas Van Geel, penned by Jef Hoogmartens and directed by Frank Van Passel.

The international cast includes the German Leonie Benesch (from the Oscar-nominated The Teachers’ Lounge), Dutch actors Jade Olieberg (De Club), Bram De Win (Flikken), and fellow Belgians Joke Emmers (Billie vs Benjamin) and Arend Pinoy (2DEZIT).

Moresnet will vie for honours in the Official Competition against notable titles including Denmark’s Dark Horse, Brazil’s Living On a Razor’s Edge, and China’s To the Wonder. The success trail was blazed in 2022 when the fiction series 1985 also clinched a spot in Canneséries’ Official Competition.
