Fifty people were evacuated on Wednesday evening after a fire broke out in a car park in the Brussels municipality of Forest.

According to a spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade, fire services were called to Avenue Victor Rousseau around 22:00 on Wednesday due to a fire in an apartment building's underground car park.

The firemen were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The burning car was insulated in the parking lot, but it caused damage to the concrete ceiling and electrical installation.

The heavy smoke reached the building above ground, which has multiple entrances. In the stairwells, carbon monoxide (CO) was detected.

Because there was no smoke extraction system, the fire department spent hours ventilating the various basement levels with a large fan.

The evacuees waited for the intervention to be completed on-site, but they were able to return home shortly after midnight.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
