In the investigation into the violent death of a 65-year-old man on Rue de Laeken in Brussels' city centre on Wednesday, a 64-year-old man has been placed under arrest for manslaughter, the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office announced on Friday.
The suspect will appear before the council chamber next Tuesday. He currently denies any involvement in the crime.
According to initial reports, a witness entered an office building on the street and asked to call the emergency services, claiming that a man was lying in a pool of blood in a building opposite.
Police and emergency services rushed to the scene and found a man dead on the second floor of the building. "The victim could be identified; he is a 65-year-old man," said Prosecutor's Office spokesperson Laura Demullier.
The Public Prosecutor's Office was notified and requested an investigating judge for manslaughter. The Federal Judicial Police laboratory and a forensic doctor also came to the scene to make the necessary observations.
Initial information gathered at the scene indicated that the victim was likely killed violently. However, an autopsy is still required to determine the exact cause of death.
"A suspect has been arrested," the Public Prosecutor's Office spokesperson continued. "He is a man born in 1961. The suspect has been placed under arrest on suspicion of manslaughter and will appear before the council chamber on Tuesday. He currently denies any involvement in the incident. The investigation is ongoing."
