The woman who walked into a Schaerbeek police station on Monday suspected of wearing a suicide vest has been released by police after interrogation. The suspect was detained at Brussels-Midi station on Tuesday after an active police search.

According to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office, the woman was interviewed by police and released on Tuesday. It would appear that the woman had not been wearing an explosive device, contrary to initial reports in the media. The woman will not be prosecuted.

On Monday, the woman entered a Schaerbeek police station on Rue de Brabant in the morning wearing a black jacket. Concealed underneath was, according to initial reports, a white bulletproof vest with black electrical wires sticking out from underneath.

Reports emerged that police feared that the woman was wearing an explosive vest. A spokesperson for  police initially refused to confirm whether they suspected that the woman was wearing an explosive device.

The woman had acted “suspiciously” and fled the police station shortly after entering. An investigation was immediately opened and police used CCTV footage to attempt to track and identify the subject. Several police zones were alerted to be on the lookout for the suspect.
