The European Commission has approved €6.1 billion in EU funding for Ukraine to buy defence equipment.
The money forms part of the €90 billion EU loan package agreed for Ukraine at the end of last year. It is intended to pay for missiles, ammunition and radar systems.
Ukraine will receive the funds once it shows which defence companies it plans to buy from, preferably European suppliers.
Earlier, €16 billion from the loan had already been approved for defence equipment, of which €8.35 billion has so far been paid out.
The announcement was made on Ukraine’s Independence Day.
“On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Europe is showing that our support is unwavering and concrete,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
European Council President António Costa is in Kyiv on Monday for celebrations marking 35 years of independence.
