President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine "had opened Pandora’s box” by targeting the Russian economy with air strikes and warned that retaliatory measures would follow.

In an interview broadcast on Saturday, Putin said Kyiv had now “let the genie out of the bottle”.

“The countermeasures will not be long in coming. You will see them,” he said, addressing Ukraine.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has repeatedly struck oil refineries and logistics centres inside Russia.

Kyiv has stepped up its drone attacks on Russian territory this summer and has also targeted private businesses, including warehouses belonging to the Russian online retailer Wildberries, which made up roughly 3% of Russian GDP prior to the campaign.

Ukraine hopes that strikes deep behind the front lines will weaken Russia’s military advantage and damage its war economy.
