Following an invitation from Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti will go to Brussels for discussions on 18 August in an attempt to improve relations between the two nations.

Tensions have intensified recently after the Kosovar government requested that Serbs present further documentation before entering Kosovo, as well as switch their Serbian licence plate for a Kosovo licence plate.

Due to diplomatic pressure from the European Union and the United States, they agreed to postpone the implementation of these new restrictions by a month.

This is the most recent in a long line of confrontations between the two nations; Kosovo, which is primarily populated by ethnic Albanians, proclaimed independence from Serbia in 2008 following years of conflict.

However, owing of the large number of ethnic Serbs in the north of the country, the Serbian government refuses to recognise Kosovo as a nation.

From a European standpoint, Kosovo is regarded as a possible EU candidate country but is not officially recognised by five EU Member States, whereas Serbia, despite the difficulty of current accession talks, is an official candidate country.
