An agreement has been reached in Sweden for the formation of a right-wing government, supported in parliament by the far-right Swedish Democrats, Ulf Kristersson, leader of the Moderate Union Party, announced on Friday.

The conservative Moderate Union Party, the Christian Democrats and the Liberals will form a government and work with the far-right Swedish Democrats (SD) in parliament, Kristersson said at a news conference.

A vote on the new prime minister will now take place on Monday.

In the Swedish parliamentary elections in September, the Social Democrats of the previous Prime Minister, Magdalena Andersson, were again the strongest party.

However, a conservative four-party right-wing bloc, centred around Kristersson’s Union Party, the Christian Democrats, the Liberals and the right-wing populist Swedish Democrats, has gained a narrow majority of 176 of the 349 seats.

On that basis, Kristersson has been instructed to form a government. Andersson announced her resignation as prime minister.
