As the Jupiler Pro League’s regular season ended on Sunday, Union Saint-Gilloise remains one of the favourites to clinch the league title during May's championship playoffs.

Brushing themselves off after a Europa League elimination at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, Union Saint-Gilloise beat already relegated Kortrijk 4-2 in the league on Sunday.

The result saw the side from Brussels finish in second place with 75 points, level with league leaders Genk – who have a better goal difference – and three points ahead of third place Royal Antwerp.

In Belgium though, the league is decided by an additional round of playoffs in which the top four sides of the regular season compete. At the start of the playoffs, the number of points won across the season are halved.

Union, Genk and Royal Antwerp will be joined by reigning champions Club Brugge who scraped into the playoffs this weekend ahead of Standard de Liege and Genk after a chaotic season.

All four sides will face each other home and away in May and early June, with most commentators viewing Genk, Union and Antwerp as the favourites for the title.

However, the side from Brussels will have to once again shake off the tag of favourites having fallen at the last hurdle during the previous playoffs, losing to Club Brugge despite having led the league in the regular season.
