British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak plans to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into the nuclear industry in the coming years. These plans are expected to create around 40,000 new jobs by 2030.

Approximately £200 million (€233 million) will be invested in Barrow-in-Furness, a town in northwestern England, for the construction of nuclear submarines. Furthermore, £353 million (€411 million) will be dedicated to job creation and training in both the military and civilian nuclear sectors.

The UK Government will work with defence companies BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Babcock, and the energy group EDF to execute this plan. Sunak perceives these investments as imperative to "guarantee the future of our nuclear deterrent and our nuclear energy supply."

The Labour opposition has already expressed its "total support" for these projects. Barrow-in-Furness plays a key role in constructing the next generation of nuclear-powered submarines, expected to be deployed by 2040 as part of the Aukus security pact with Australia and the US.
