European defence stocks fell sharply on Monday following US President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that a peace deal in Ukraine had “never been closer.”

An index tracking defence sector shares dropped 2.8%, with Germany’s Rheinmetall shedding over 3%. Sweden’s Saab and Italy’s Leonardo also saw declines.

In London, British defence companies BAE Systems and Babcock recorded significant losses as well.
