Vilvoorde crackdown results in dozen arrests

A large-scale police operation in the Halle-Vilvoorde district led to the arrest of twelve people and the inspection of hundreds of vehicles and individuals.

The operation took place from Thursday afternoon to early Friday morning and involved 12 local police zones, as well as various federal police services. Over the course of the action, authorities checked 903 vehicles and 321 individuals.

A total of 55 traffic infractions and 28 judicial offences were recorded. Among the judicial offences, 12 related to drug possession, while four involved drug sales. Three of those arrested were wanted internationally, according to the federal police.

Officers confiscated various quantities of drugs, including 9.8 kilograms of cannabis, 45 packs of cocaine—40 of which were hidden—and hashish. Five vehicles, a scooter, several mobile phones, a butterfly knife, a taser, and cash were also seized.

Traffic violations included seven cases of driving without a licence or despite a driving ban, five instances of driving under the influence of alcohol, two under the influence of drugs, five cases of driving without a seatbelt, and four of using a mobile phone while driving.

Speed checks were carried out on 14,555 vehicles, with 2,950 violations registered. The highest speed recorded was 200 km/h, leading to the immediate confiscation of 26 driving licences.

The Railway Police and Securail conducted inspections on 11 trains, issuing 13 fines for fare evasion. Additionally, ten buses and three taxis were checked as part of the operation.

Police frequently changed their checkpoint locations and utilised mobile units to maximise their presence and ensure effective enforcement.
