Romania’s military said it shot down an unauthorised drone in its airspace on Sunday, the third consecutive day it has done so.
The drone was intercepted about 12 kilometres north-east of Sulina over Romanian territorial waters, according to the defence ministry. As in the previous incidents, it was flying close to the border with Ukraine.
Romania, a Nato member, downed a drone for the first time on Friday after its airspace had been violated dozens of times. That drone was brought down about 114 kilometres from the capital, Bucharest.
Romanian prosecutors who examined the wreckage said it was a Shahed drone, a type used by Russia in its war against Ukraine.
A second drone was shot down on Saturday, 9.6 kilometres west of Sfântu Gheorghe in the Danube Delta, near the Ukrainian border.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Romania has detected dozens of drone incursions. At the end of May, one crashed into an apartment block in the border city of Galați, injuring two people.
It was the first time since the war began that an attack had struck a densely populated area in a Nato country and caused injuries. In 2025, Romania’s parliament passed a law allowing the military to shoot down drones.
