At least 16 people were taken to hospital on Monday following an accident involving an Austrian coach and a van on the A28 motorway near Wezep in the Netherlands, according to initial police reports.
Initial reports indicated that eight casualties had been taken to hospital. The police have now stated that casualties with minor injuries have also been taken to hospital.
This brings the total to sixteen people: fifteen from the coach and the driver of the van. The driver of the van is seriously injured, the police added.
The coach was reportedly carrying 54 students and four teachers from a German state school. They were on their way to Paris.
At around 04:15, the coach and the van collided. The coach rolled over and came to rest on the carriageway reserved for oncoming traffic, according to Dutch media reports. The van was also heavily damaged and was completely split in two.
An ANP photographer observed that the two vehicles were several hundred metres apart, each on a different lane.
Numerous emergency services are at the scene. The alert level has been raised to 'code 20', meaning that emergency services are preparing for a scenario involving up to 20 casualties.
The disruption is expected to last until the evening rush hour, according to Rijkswaterstaat Verkeersinformatie in a post on X.
