A 16-year-old teenager has died after being run over by a car in the East Flanders town of Temse on Monday evening.

Shortly after 22:15, the teen was riding on the cycle path of the bridge that overlooks the E17 motorway on Doornstraat and was mowed down by a car. The cyclist was thrown over a small fence that separates the bicycle path from the slope of the bridge.

The noise from the incident alerted a nearby resident who discovered a lifeless body as well as a broken bicycle saddle and skateboard. He immediately alerted the energy services.

The driver of the automobile, a red Renault Megane, fled the scene, according to the Flemish newspaper De Morgen. He later collided with a lamp-post at the junction of Lange Rekstraat and the Beeldstraat in Sint-Niklaas.

He was apprehended by local police, who suspect him of being the motorist who hit the cyclist in Temse. He is claimed to have been under the influence since drugs were discovered in his car, De Morgen has reported.

The East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office dispatched a police expert and a forensic doctor to the scene, and both sides were closed for further investigation.
