Despite ongoing strikes, Delhaize has stated that it will do “everything in its power” to keep its stores open on Easter weekend, a usually lucrative period for the company, Belga News Agency reports.
With a month of staff strikes having taken place since Delhaize announced its plans to franchise stores that had not been already, 50 stores in Wallonia and Brussels remain closed on Friday. Unions are set to continue their protests this weekend but Delhaize has stated that it will do its utmost to ensure that shops remain open to customers.
However, the company did not reveal how it plans to respond to the threats of continued strikes, which unions say will go on in protest against the management’s plans to transfer 128 of Delhaize’s stores to independent contractors.

The company also now has to contend with a legal complaint filed by the BBTK trade union on Thursday. They have accused Delhaize of "not respecting" the 25-year-old Renault labour law, which details the procedures a company must follow if a decision of theirs leads to redundancies.
Normally, the company has to warn employees and unions of their decisions ahead of time and allow them to examine possible alternatives which BBTK argues that Delhaize did not do.
