Jean-Luc Godard, the world-renowned French-Swiss director and pioneer of the French Nouvelle Vague (New Wave) film movement, has died in Paris at the age of 91.

The director's death was first reported by the French newspaper Libération on Tuesday morning.

He leaves a legacy of 44 films, some of which have influenced the works of today's most important filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.

His first film, "Breathless," was released in 1960, and his most recent film, "The Image Book," came out in 2018, his career thus spanning a mammoth 58 years.

He was a key figure in the French Nouvelle Vague movement in the late 1950s, alongside his peers François Truffaut and Agnès Varda. He also wrote in the famous Cahiers du Cinéma publication, closely associated with the launch of the Nouvelle Vague movement.

After the May 68 protests in Paris, he vowed to make more 'political' films in which he would display his Marxist tendencies and combat what he perceived to be western imperialism.
