Inmate dies in Hasselt prison cell fire

A prisoner at Hasselt prison died in a fire in his cell during the night on Wednesday at around 01.30 am, the Limburg public prosecutor’s office reported.

The man, aged 39, was alone in his cell at the time of the incident.

Local firefighters intervened to extinguish the fire.

The Prosecutor’s Office dispatched the forensic police laboratory and experts to the scene to investigate the precise circumstances of the death and determine the cause of the fire.
