A man was seriously injured after falling between two buildings on Wednesday night.
The victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but is no longer in a life-threatening condition.
“At 03.10 on Thursday 6 August, our officers were called to the centre of Brussels by members of the public who had heard moaning,” said a police spokesperson.
“After a thorough search, police officers found a person in a ventilated shaft approximately two metres wide and around twenty metres deep. This shaft is situated between two buildings and is accessible only via the roof."
The victim, a man in his fifties, was lying at the bottom of the shaft. His evacuation required the intervention of the RISC (Rescue In Safe Conditions) team from the Brussels Fire Brigade, supported by the Mobile Emergency Resuscitation Service (SMUR/MUG).
“The victim was taken to hospital in a serious condition, but is no longer in a life-threatening condition,” the spokesperson continued.
“Given the unusual circumstances of the incident, the public prosecutor’s office has been informed. The investigation is ongoing and, at this stage, an accident is considered the most likely cause.”
