Iranian hackers shut down a British power station for four days last month in a cyberattack, The Telegraph has reported.

The British authorities have not identified the site for security reasons. It is understood to have been a relatively small plant, and the outage did not affect the UK’s overall energy supply.

The incident was reported to the National Cyber Security Centre, which is part of the GCHQ intelligence agency. The government then alerted energy companies to the attack and issued advice.

The attack took place at around the same time as cyberattacks on water treatment facilities in 12 US states. Those incidents caused flooding and problems with water pressure, and US government sources blamed Iran.

According to The Telegraph, the attack on the British plant may have been intended mainly to demonstrate that hackers linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard can gain access to critical infrastructure. Iran has stepped up cyberattacks on Western countries since the outbreak of the war.
