A 12-year-old boy tragically died on Monday evening after being hit by a police car while on his scooter in Ganshoren, Brussels.

The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Monday evening that an accident involving a local police vehicle had occurred on Avenue des Gloires Nationales in Ganshoren.

The victim, a child born in 2013, was resuscitated at the scene before being transferred to the hospital, where he later died.

An expert has been appointed to determine the circumstances of the accident, and the investigation has been entrusted to the P Committee.

According to Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade, the collision occurred around 17:50.

Initial findings from the investigation and the raid carried out indicate that the young person was riding a scooter and that the police vehicle wanted to check him. The young man fled and a chase ensued, the Brussels Public Prosecutor confirmed later on Tuesday.

Ganshoren Mayor Jean-Paul Van Laethem (Les Engagés) paid tribute to the victim and police officers involved.

"I am thinking of this young boy, born in 2013. I also have thoughts for the officers who must be shocked by this tragic outcome," Van Laethem stated.

The Brussels-West police zone declined to comment further, directing inquiries to the Brussels public prosecutor, as they are a "concerned party" in this case.

This is the second time in a month someone has died in a collision involving a police car.

In May, a man on a moped was killed after being hit by a police patrol vehicle on in the Marolles district of Brussels. It later emerged the police officer driving the car had an expired driving licence.

Another incident on Saturday saw a police vehicle strike a pedestrian near Place Princess Elizabeth in Schaerbeek during a police chase. The woman was injured but her life was not put in danger.
