The province of Limburg aims to approve the Provincial Spatial Implementation Plan (PRUP) by the end of the year to enable the construction of a new prison in Leopoldsburg.

The prison, designed to accommodate 312 inmates, will be located on the former military site at Reigersvliet. The Buildings Agency can begin seeking a contractor once the plan is finalised, according to Het Belang van Limburg.

The project has faced delays over the past decade. Initially, construction plans were halted after the Council for Permit Disputes ruled the original PRUP invalid. This decision followed a complaint from a neighbour regarding the environmental permit for a nearby recycling park.

To address this, the province is drafting a new implementation plan for the site. They intend to present a preliminary design to the provincial council in April, followed by a public review. Approval of the finalised plans is anticipated by the end of the year.

“Every regulation in the PRUP is being clarified and specified further, as advised by the Council for Permit Disputes,” stated Inge Moors of the CD&V party, Deputy for Spatial Planning.
