A fire broke out on Thursday morning in a house in the Brussels borough of Neder-over-Heembeek.
The fire has rendered the property uninhabitable, according to the Brussels Fire Brigade.
Emergency services were called out at around 05:05 on Thursday morning to a house on Rue des Faînes. On arrival, they found a fierce fire that had started on the ground floor of the property.
“The elderly resident had managed to get to safety but had inhaled smoke and was taken to hospital for treatment,” said a fire service spokesperson.
“We were able to extinguish the fire, which had started accidentally in the kitchen, but the property is uninhabitable. The utilities have also been cut off.”
According to the fire service spokesperson, there were no smoke alarms in the house, even though these are required by law.
