Diest will begin construction of the Demerpad, a new cycling route along the Demer river, on Monday 2 February, as part of the future F26 cycle highway between Aarschot and Diest.
The Demerpad will feature a separate, two-way cycling path connecting Turnhoutsebaan with Schaluinstraat, offering a safer alternative for cyclists travelling to and from Diest station.
The path will pass through Zwartebeekplein, follow the right bank of the Demer, go under the Citadellaan bridge, and extend towards Schaluinveld. Some sections will also include a separate footpath for pedestrians to walk comfortably along the water.
A key part of the project is the construction of a new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians over the Demer, which will later provide a direct link to Boudewijnvest.
Preparatory works are set to start in the first week of February 2026, with the main construction beginning the following week. Completion is expected by autumn 2026, with the project costing a total of €2,402,908.65.
