Due to heavy rainfall in recent days, the Belgian national football team will not be able to play Serbia at the King Baudouin Stadium on Wednesday evening and the game has been moved to Leuven.
However, the Belgian Football Association has stated that it is "definitely" playing the European qualifier on Sunday on their familiar home ground, the Brussels authorities said.
There is nothing wrong with the turf at the King Baudouin Stadium, but the water could not sufficiently penetrate to the bottom of the pitch in recent days, director of the City of Brussels' sports department Pierre Clam told Bruzz.
"Due to the many litres of rain over the past few days, the ground is far too saturated. It has turned into a small pool, this situation is exceptional," he said.
With the friendly international against Serbia coming up, the authorities experimented with possible solutions over the past few days. "We have tested different pumps, but the water simply does not go away."

The coming days are not forecast to be so rainy, which is good news ahead of the Red Devils' European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan on Sunday. If Belgium win, they will almost certainly be series leaders at next year's European Championships in Germany and avoid other strong countries in the group stage.
"On Thursday, we will cover the turf with a tarpaulin so that Sunday can definitely be played in the stadium," Clam said. "There is no question about that."
